In the late summer of 2020, a group of Astorians collectively noticed the complete lack of access to woodworking shop space in Queens.

We began meeting informally to determine if something could be done to improve the situation, noting the diversity of the people attending our meetups that fall.

Soon realizing we could have a deeper impact by providing an outlet for aspiring and experienced woodworkers, we established ourselves as a registered 501(c)(3) organization run entirely by volunteers, offering classes and opportunities for participants to develop their skills while improving their communities.

What People Are Saying

“By providing professional painting and shelving, AWC uplifted Free Store as a space of legitimacy and dignity. This communicates to the neighborhood that the space is held in solitary, not charity.

The beautification also encourages all types of neighbors to come by, and keep coming back. This work really makes us shine.”

— Margaret, The Free Store

“Working with AWC was like being around supportive friends who had endless patience and great advice.

We asked AWC for their assistance on a youth-led build project and their guidance made the whole experience confidence driven, problem-solving, and fun.”

— Elizabeth O’Connor, Moore Jackson Cemetery & Community Garden

“As a long time Astoria resident of nearly 20 years with a lifelong interest in woodworking and carpentry, I have been looking for access to professional shop and tools literally for years. When I discovered that there was a fledging group of like-minded craftspeople right in my backyard, I was ecstatic! Whether teaching new skills to people of all levels and backgrounds or organizing community outreach events, AWC is off to an amazing start and I’m sure will continue to grow into a positive resource for all! I personally can’t wait for a fully equipped woodshop open and accessible to all. Woodworking and community go hand in hand!”

— Adam, AWC Volunteer
